Easter in Aarhus 2023 Guide

Easter in Aarhus 2023 Guide

Despite the frosty start to Spring this year, Easter in Aarhus is a time where the sun starts to shine, the days get longer and longer, and when yellow daffodils – known as Easter lillies in Danish – start to bloom. Here’s a guide to what you can do over Easter to soak up the lively atmosphere in Aarhus

Soak up the multitude of musical events

Start this weekend with Outdoor Season Opening at Institut for X, where there will be – weather permitting – outdoor music, natural wines, beer, and a bakery opening – with pizza all afternoon and evening! Later in the evening, move on down the road to the “warm up” of Immense Festival at Volume Village, an indoor event of DJs and trance. The following weekend at Volume Village will be a performance by Ravi Kuma. And if you haven’t yet checked out Turkis, on April 8th Samba Toure, a Malian guitarist and vocalist will be creating a blend of “River Niger blues, traditional Songhai themes and Western influences”. And if you just want to try an Easter beer, bars around the city are serving the annual “Påskebryg”, where breweries design a beer especially suited for Easter.

View the work of local artists at the annual Easter exhibition

In case you haven’t yet visited Aarhus’ art centre, Kunsthal Aarhus, now’s the time. On April 1st each year, the gallery opens its Easter Exhibition, where you can view the works of upcoming Danish artists. This year there will be tapestry, audiovisual art, and more. Found near Aros, the free-entry museum has a cafe, and holds other exhibitions throughout the year.

The Easter exhibition will be available to visit until May 21st.

Experience art from all over the world

On April 1st, Aros Art Museum will open its new exhibition, Erró – The Power of Images. Born in Iceland, but living in Paris, France, Erro became known for his commentary on popular culture in the 1950s and 1960s. His bright, infectious collages will be displayed on Level 5 of the museum. The weeks surrounding Easter will also be the last chance to go and see Chiharu Shiota – Invisible Line at Aros, the works by a Japanese installation artist. The works are said to capture the thoughts of both mortality and exuberance.

Paint and create your own ceramics

There’s nothing quite as “hygge” – cosy – as getting together with friends to get creative. Especially when you have a theme – Easter in Aarhus for example. At Art by Me and Creative Space, both social creative cafe spaces in Aarhus’ city center, you can do just that. Choose one of their ceramics, and paint it how you like, while in the company of friends and/or family. They’ll do the firing and glazing for you! Then you go and pick your creation up a week or so later. And you can do this all year ’round!

Take the family to Den Gamle By’s Easter in Aarhus

From April 1-10, Den Gamle By, Aarhus’ old town turned open-air museum, hosts Easter, where kids can paint Easter eggs, cut Easter letters, and make Easter chickens. It’s also a great time to wander around Den Gamle By, which comes to life with its ornaments especially put up to suit the colours and celebrations of this time of year.

Experience the opening of Tivoli

On April 6th, the amusement park in Aarhus’ Marselisborg forest opens again. Tivoli Friheden has a 5D cinema, an “Illusions Factory”, and such rides as The Kangaroo, The Butterfly, and The Red Baron. At Easter, you can experience the new and “wild” ride called Solstorm, which supposedly sends you into an uncontrollable spin!
